It amuses me how certain phrases come into use, sometimes they are very local in the extreme. I suspect this one is relevant to our house! If I leave our back gate, I’m stood on a public footpath. Across from this are a couple of tennis courts, a children’s play area, and a couple of football pitches. The typical urban “sports amenity”. There is a path that navigates this to a gate the other side, this leads to Ferndown Common. It’s about 160 acres, and since 1984 has been a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). Both the smooth snake and the sand lizard have been spotted here, also adders – but the less said about them the better 🙂 It is an area of dry heathland. In our house it is a mythical place know as “over the back” – most used in the past as a dog walking area, sadly no longer!
As I’ve posted before I’ve had a roll of Foma 200 in the Olympus XA2 just for wandering about. I took a walk “over the back” and made a few exposures. The first in this post is of what remains of an Bronze Age Barrow, approx 3000 years old. To my knowledge no artifacts have ever been found.
