As if by magic the roll of Ilford Delta 100 ran out just as I reached the front door of Dyrham Park (House). It’s amazing how often this happens, it’s almost like subconsciously I’m shooting accordingly to make that happen. Of course there is nothing subconscious about it, it’s deliberate. If the film had approachedContinue reading “Inside Dyrham with HP5”

Dyrham Park/Delta 100/FX21
Someone has been living in Dyrham Park since the Bronze Age! In 577 there was a battle here and the West Saxons drove the Britons back into Wales and Cornwall. The Estate is mentioned in the Doomsday book, but most of the house that stands today date from 1691, the creation of William Blathwayt. It’sContinue reading “Dyrham Park/Delta 100/FX21”
Charlecote Park
The estate of Charlecote Park in Warwickshire has been in the Lucy family since 1247. The house was built in the 1550’s and has been added to since – most notably a “service wing” in 1829. All of that maybe remarkable enough, but perhaps even more so, is the fact that the Lucy family stillContinue reading “Charlecote Park”
St Leonards, Warwickshire.
St Leonards church in Warwickshire stands at the gate of Charlecote Park, home of the Lucy family. There is a tree lined avenue for the family to process along on a Sunday morning. The church that stands here today is a Victorian affair, it was commissioned by Mary Elizabeth Lucy as a memorial to herContinue reading “St Leonards, Warwickshire.”
Last of Coventry
After the wander around the Coventry Transport Museum, time was getting on and I was getting tired! I’ve learned to call it a day when that happens. With a few frames left I finished off my roll of HP5 on a couple of exposures of the Whittle Arch – named after Sir Frank Whittle, inventorContinue reading “Last of Coventry”
Coventry Transport Museum
The more I walked around Coventry the more I liked it. Despite the dull and wet weather, I still managed to get about without trouble, it’s a nice compact city. Above is the “Glass Bridge”, it has to be said a little pointless as it doesn’t seem to actually bridge anything! It does go overContinue reading “Coventry Transport Museum”
Outside the Cathedral
When I was a small child I saw an image of Sir Jacob Epstein’s bronze, St Michael’s Victory over the Devil. It was unveiled in June 1960, so 9 years before I was born, plenty long enough to have made it into my “Child’s Encyclopaedia” so I’m guessing it was there. Certainly long before theContinue reading “Outside the Cathedral”
Coventry (new) Cathedral
For those of you who have been following this blog for a while, will know that I have along term project of photographing the UK’s Anglican Cathedrals, on Ilford’s XP2. As this was my first visit to Coventry I couldn’t miss the Cathedral so make a visit. I was tempted to say, and my initialContinue reading “Coventry (new) Cathedral”
Coventry Old Cathedral
Coventry has had three Cathedrals. The first was St Mary’s, this was monastic and destroyed in the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. There are few remains. Next came St Michaels, built in the 14th century but not designated a cathedral until 1918. St Michaels was destroyed in the “Coventry Blitz” on 14th November 1940,Continue reading “Coventry Old Cathedral”
Vertical Coventry
After my drive “up north”, visiting Warwick Castle, and getting to the hotel, I had a carvery dinner, then flopped out on the bed and watched the new version of Flight of the Phoenix on Film 4. In my opinion, not an improvement on the old version, but watchable enough. Next morning I was inContinue reading “Vertical Coventry”
