On our “Ektar Journey” down the river Piddle, Puddle or Trent we’ve reached Tolpuddle. This village is most famous for the Tolpuddle Martyrs, whose story you can read here. Above is the village church of St John the Evangelist, in whose graveyard one of the martyrs, James Hammett, is laid to rest. To this day there is very large Martyrs Day Festival in July. Most often attended by noteworth people from the Labour and trade union movements. Bearing in mind that the village has a population of about 500, in 2011 the festival/rally drew a record crowd of 10,000! These days I believe it is capped at 5,000. The event normally concludes with a wreath laying at the grave of James Hammett below.
Of course the village has other points of interest connected to the martyrs for the visitor to visit…
Of course there is a village pub and it could have only one name!
