If there is a capital or centre on the Ilse of Wight then it’s Newport. Most things radiate out from there, and if you are driving on the Island you’ll go through it many times whether you want to or not! On this occasion I’d just visited Carisbrooke Castle, was going through and pulled in for milk and wine! There is parking along the side of the Guildhall (right) handy for a quick stop. It was closed apart from a small local museum, so I didn’t loiter. Just across the road from here is Calvert’s Hotel, once the home of the town’s mayor and dates from 1732. Just up the road is the impressive market cross, celebrating Newport’s medieval “right to trade”!
The fish and chip shop was open but Newport Minster, which I would like to have seen, had a lovely sign that said everyone welcome – was closed.
