Bembridge Windmill

What’s worse than a ram in your photo? Answer half a ram! I visited Bembridge Windmill on the Isle of Wight – it’s a National Trust property and like all the others on the Island at the time, it wasn’t open. None of them open until a week after Easter, and I knew that was the case before visiting so it was no surprise. It was on my route anyway and I wanted to see if I could make a photo of it. The one above is made from the adjacent lane, peering over the fence in the only suitable gap. With my 40mm lens I could get everything in, including half a ram! If I panned to the right to get a whole ram, I clipped the left hand sail, if I panned left to exclude the ram, I clipped the right sail! 10 minutes it stood there then finally it moved, just in time for another to appear. This one however settled a couple of feet further “into the image” so I pressed the button.

Further along I discovered another path that circumnavigated the enclosure so I made a couple more images. These images were made with the Canon EOS 30 and the 40mm STM, my favourite combo, on Ilford Delta 100 and developed in FX21. This is bulk loaded film, which, in the past I don’t remember having numbers printed on it. If you think about it – I may load a 24exp, just a few for a test, then a full 36 so the numbers could be all over the place! As it happens I only use 36’s and somehow managed to load this roll anyway with the printed numbers perfectly aligned! 1-36!!
