Just a little further down stream from Tolpuddle, our previous stop following the river, lies Affpuddle. A small village of about 400 people, dates back to Saxon times and was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. It’s a charming village and for the purpose of this little photo project has two good points. One is the charming Church of St Lawrence, and it’s one of the rare points to actually see the river on this trip. To the point where it’s feet away from the church!
The church of St Laurence is known for its highly decorated pews, dating from 1545. The church itself dates from the 13th century but was, as is often the case in these parts enlarged by an aisle and a tower in the 15th century. Just behind the church is a wall, over which runs the river. A short walk through the graveyard and exiting onto a small road, leads to a bridge over the river. A rare spot to photograph the river. Below LH side is looking up-stream, RH is looking downstream. As I’ve noted before on this outing the camera was the Canon EOS30 with the 40mm STM. I used Kodak Ektar 100 which was lab developed but scanned at home.
Further down stream is the village of Briantspuddle, there is no church or any public buildings to speak of there, with the exception of the First World War Memorial, by sculptor and artist Eric Gill. It was sculpted in situ starting in January 1918 and is made of Portland stone.
