There’s much wrong with this image. The mother needs to be better separated from the background on the right hand side. That could be improved with a better scan, and a little photoshop levels. It’s an old scan. It’s not pin sharp, again a better scan would help a bit. It’s slightly on a “wonk” – there’s enough room to sort that out too.
Having said all that – there’s something I like about the photo. It was made in downtown San Francisco in the late 80’s / early 90’s on Tmax 100 and a battered old Cosina CT1 camera with a 50mm lens. Somehow life was simpler back then. I was free and single with few commitments and could (within reason) grab a camera, jump on a plane, and photograph. These days the main thing that has changed is the energy level! It becomes easier to “maybe do that next week / month / year”, or so far into the future that in reality it will never happen. In that vein of thought, although it’s too early to make new years resolutions that I never do anyway – next year I WILL get out and photograph more!!
