The Country Squire

When I went to the “Wings and Wheels” show, I parked up, on the rough field you see above, next row back was a Ford Country Squire from 1970. Not in the show, just parked there like everyone else. In the window the owner had popped a sign…

It’s one year younger than me! A 7 litre V8 engine! I’m glad I don’t have to pay for the petrol! As you see, interestinly not imported until 2014. This image was made with a phone, while the main image above was photographed on Kodak Ektar 100, with the Canon EOS 30. Amazingly I’d say the contrast and colour is almost the same in both!

Next door to it was this …. well red truck. I’m not sure what it is! It’s right hand drive so I assume it’s UK, 60’s? Again just in the car park with everyone else!

    1. Hi Nige! Well there we go! I never think to google the reg! I wonder if it was sold and moved down this end of the country? The link seemed to suggest it was/is for sale! I’ll up-date the page – hope you are keeping well – Cheers Andy

  1. Next door neighbor had a ’69 Country Squire; it looked almost identical to this one, except its headlights were exposed. His son delivered the afternoon newspaper. He was injured and couldn’t do the work, so he paid my brother and I to do it until he got better. On Sunday the paper came in the morning and it was enormous, chock full of ads. The neighbor helped us out by loading full bags of papers into his wagon and driving us around, dropping the bags off at strategic locations where we’d pick them up as we walked. The latch on his tailgate had become iffy; by this time the car was 12 or 13 years old, was pretty rusty, and had a lot of miles on it. It popped open and swung wide while we were driving down the street. He said, “Watch this,” braked hard, the door swung back, and with a loud BANG latched itself securely.

Ford wagons of this era had the “magic tailgate” which could open down or out.

    1. Hi Jim! Your comment reminds me that I did a paper round as a kid and it was Saturday the the weight doubled for me with the TV guide for the week! With regards to the car, I’m not sure if it’s even the same model but I just think “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” car! That’s sure some clever engineering with the tail gate, or as we would say “boot” !! 🙂 Cheers Andy
