Social Media and me

Several years ago I looked at Facebook. Friends and colleagues were always amazed that I still wasn’t there. I looked, frankly thought what a load of **ap, and passed. There was just such a lot of rubbish there. A few years later, I had seen a programme featuring the photographer Stephen Shore, and that he was doing a photo-project on Instagram. That piqued my interest, so I looked at that. Then I discovered it was part of Meta, and the idea faded. Truth is I just can’t be bothered with all the “blah” – I’d rather have a cup of coffee and stare up the garden!

I was having a chat with a colleague the other day, the one who I normally ask something like “What’s the matter with this bloody thing – why can’t I……” whist I look at a blank screen.. (VPN means something in some language apparently!). Our conversation turned to social media and Bluesky was suggested. “Is that the butterfly one?” I asked, “yes” came the reply. “What’s the octopus looking one?” I asked further, a blank expression, I googled “Oh that’s ‘Ghostface Chillah’ – Snapchat. Perhaps don’t go there!” Fair enough.

There is a pattern in my life that shows things I am interested in I enjoy and get good at. Things that don’t interest me, just don’t, and it would have saved everyone’s time in the long run had that fact have just been accepted. School teachers trying to excite me with Geometry or French for example. As it happens I’d now like to learn French very much and I love France, but trying to engage a 13 years old me about how a table is male or female – forget it. Same with social media – not interested.

Then I did read up about “the butterfly one” and was more interested. Long story short, I liked the look of it and have joined! Apparently I’m ‪@analogue-andy.bsky.social‬ When satellite TV came to the UK one of the companies was BSB (British Satellite Broadcasting) They later merged with Sky and became BSKYB. Apparently that’s quite different! 🙂

My main thought is to use that as a signpost to this blog, but I may pop the odd different thing there. We’ll see…
