A New Colour Film!

Today brings both good and bad news! The good first. At 4pm today (UK) time, Harman lifted the embargo on their new film – and it’s colour!! Harman Phoenix 200 is a colour C41 film, but unlike most it has no orange mask layer. But there is further news… I’ll cut and paste the official release –

INTRODUCING HARMAN PHOENIX

Like the mythical Phoenix, this new film represents hope, rebirth, and transformation. It signals the start of a new legacy for HARMAN and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for one of the world’s largest photographic film manufacturers.

As their first colour film, it is not without some quirks, however, it is a signal of intent for the business with sales from this film being used to refine and improve their formulations, coating capabilities and colour technology. The aim is that each new HARMAN colour film will be an improvement on the previous.

So this isn’t just a new film – it’s the start of a new series of them!! This also puts to bed any ideas that this may be someone else’s “Movie Print Emulsion”. I congratulate Harman – I’ve got my first roll, complete with sticker and badge! I’ll post images once I’ve used it up.

And so to the bad news. Kodak are at it again. Apparently from Jan 1st, at least in the UK, there is yet another price increase on it’s way. I’ve only heard about colour, it seems that the increases range from 9% on Portra 800 to 13-14% on Gold. This is on the trade price, so retail will be a little higher. If you like/use Kodak colour buy a few rolls to beat the increase – or better still, give the new Harman Phoenix a try!

  1. In the early1980’s Ilford used to have in their film line up Ilfocolour C41 film and Ilfochrome E6, guessing these were made for them by another film producer. I used a few rolls of the Ilfochrome it was a good film. Looking forward to trying the Harman Phoenix 200 when I can.

    1. Hello, Yes I remember the Ilfocolor C41, even then I think I suspected it wasn’t made by Ilford but someone else. I did use a few rolls, and for some strange reason remember taking pictures of sheep!! All very random! I don’t remember the E6 though! Next day out that requires colour I’ll try out Phoenix and see what it’s like! Cheers and best wishes – Andy
