National Gallery

After having a moan about the British Museum, or more precisely about it being overcrowded the other day, I thought I’d move on to the National Gallery today! The image above was made on the far north east corner of Trafalgar Square, two guys were just water blast cleaning the plinth, and the spray was backlit in a spectacular way. Just as I got a composition, they stopped of course. I stood there for 5 minutes but no more spray! I made the photo anyway as I liked the backlit column, the two figures on the plinth and the leading lines from the cotrails.

Once inside, I liked the shapes and black and white contrast in the hallway above. In the gallery proper I decided not to photograph any artwork, I never do with the possible exception of sculpture. I do like to watch how people react to seeing art though. Increasingly that’s by not looking at it or turning their back on it!

I think I may start a little series where I photograph people stood in front of a famous piece of art, view or building, completely oblivious to it, while on their phone! The National Gallery was a much nicer experience to wander, there was even an exhibit from school children loosely based on the sea. One had made a ship in a bottle of sorts – which greatly reminded me of my father who used to make them. Outside I made a couple more images of Trafalgar Square.

Chatter: Canon EOS 30 with 40mm STM. Ilford Delta 400, developed in Rodinal 1+50.

  1. I visited the National Gallery (well, the National Portrait Gallery) back in September. I also photographed Trafalgar Square and the Fourth Plinth (albeit with no-one cleaning it while I was there). It was one of those days when the temperature was in the mid-30s, which made the day a lot of fun!

    1. Hello! I seem to wilt in the heat these days, I may have been tempted to jump in the fountain! The weather during my week there was an ideal temp for exploring, although a few more sunny spells and a few less showers would have been good! I guess fisherman have the “fish that got away” I guess we have “photo’s that got away” – I’m getting slow!! 🙂 Cheers and best wishes Andy
