Kodak: Tri-X

I recently shot a roll of Kodak Tri-X, to the best of my knowledge it’s the first roll I’ve used. I took a walk at the West Moors Country Park. It’s a good place for a walk especially if it’s been raining a bit, as the paths are all tarmacked. Just at the entrance to the park the electricity pylon was being worked on – not a job I’d enjoy!

Shots like these with quite a bit of sky seem to show the grain structure more, while a bit further into the park stands a grand, solo oak tree, that didn’t show so much grain!

I developed this film in Ilford ID11 (Kodak D76), 1+3.2 20°c for 19 mins. Ilford agitation with a good twizzle at 10 mins. I was pleased with the set of negs I got!

For a 400 speed film of traditional type, I was happy with the grain, even pleased! The film dried well and sat perfectly flat in the scanner, and the scans you see here have had very little work, other than re-sizing.

While I wasn’t over keen on my recent mix of Ilford Delta 400 in Rodinal, this blend of Tri-X in ID11 looks good to me. I’m tempted to think this could become my go to for 400asa. I have three more rolls to use, then I’ll be back using up some HP5 for a while, that should give me enough practice to make a proper comparison, this is a promising start!

Chatter Canon EOS 30, with EF 50mm f1.4. Kodak Tri-X developed in ID11 1+3.2 at 20°c for 19 mins.

    1. Hi Shawn, I know I find it hard to believe myself! I think it’s because the local stores that, back in the day, I used to buy film from never stocked it. TMAX 400 when it came out yes, HP5 yes, but never Tri-X. I may have shot an odd roll that I don’t remember 20 years ago, but I don’t think so – so another classic tried out for me! All best wishes – Andy
