Pilford: Colour!

I had a single use camera – a Fuji Quicksnap hanging around – it was a freebee that came my way a while ago. It was time that I used it up and was out-of-date by a year already. Why would I use a “suc” when I have an underused Leica M6 was the question? I placed a small square of black electrical tape over the lens and clicked the film off. With these cameras the film is pre loaded and so by doing that I was actually winding it back into the cassette. I cracked it open removed the film, then the film end, and used it up while I was at the Pilford Show, for a splash of colour. I haven’t seen any stores with Fuji Superia X-tra 400 for a while now – I wonder if it’s finally gone?

Somethings are meant to be. You may remember a recent single use camera that I did try recently here. That needed a cassette with a “cog top” and the oly one I had to hand was this un-processed film. Back into the dark bag to wind this film into an old Kodak cassette so I could re-use the “cog top”. So what I ended up with was… a used and ready for processing FUJI film in a KODAK cassette. A new ready to shoot KODAK film in a FUJI cassette. (Just like the “new” Fuji C200 ??? 🙂 )

Chatter: Leica M6 with Zeiss Biogon 35mm lens Fuji 400 Superia. Lab processed but scanned at home.

  1. Hi Andy, I am just wondering if there were any complaints to the organisers of this rally . I am thinking of the preponderance of Confederate battle flags at the event. Just an observation but this flag is offensive to many (not just in the US) as I am sure you know. It does make you wonder if the individual car owners were aware or not of the message this sends, or perhaps if they knew they just did not care. That in my opinion is the power of photography the unnoticed gets noticed.
    All the best.

    1. Hi Ed, you raise a very good point.

I did consider whether or not to post one image in particular! I suspect that the people in question are not fully aware of the history, and I may include myself in that. There is a small “Sinclair 3 wheeler” that is the most obvious, I took it to be a comedy “homage” to the Dukes of Hazzard. I find myself divided. On one hand do we (including photographers) pretend we don’t see the flag or indeed a statue or other item? Do we pretend and develop collective amnesia that other, now offensive things didn’t exist, like the Black and White Minstrel’s for example. The National Trust don’t seem keen to point out that a large portion of their houses were built or at least partly paid for from the profits of slavery. Did the late Queen Mother and by extension the late Queen not benefit from Sugar (plantations!?)

Going off topic, another thing I objected to back along was the BBC’s biased reporting of the fox hunting ban, especially down here in the West Country. I doubt many cared in London or Manchester!? Why do I say biased? Not once, never, at any time, on any news programme I saw, was it shown what the result was. Never did we see a fox torn apart.

Now let me be clear I am not for one moment suggesting that the two items are similar in any way, other than certain un-palatable truths are often “swept under the carpet” and I think I fit in to the category of “put it all out there” show it all, that way much better informed conversations can be had, and perhaps we can all learn to live with each other, and respect one another better!

      All best wishes, Andy
