Happy 1000th

As I mentioned the other day I haven’t been doing too much photography recently, it’s just been too hot! Having said that I have caught up on both developing and scanning. A non-milestone of sorts was reached as I filed the 1000th film. Or, more acurately the 1000th negative film as I now store them! So not included are any of the 126 or 110 films I used, nor the hundreds of slide films, they are in a storage box, unnumbered but in a rough order, nor does it include 100 rolls of 120 film that I decided at one point I’d file separately from 35mm, but once that file was full decided not to bother separating them anymore! In other words, it’s actually more like the 2000th film but who’s counting (me apparently!)? I must investigate where 996 escaped to! I’m reminded of the Henri Cartier-Bresson quote “Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst”!

The “1000th Roll” was FP4, developed in Barry Thornton Metol Two Bath, 5 minutes in each bath at 20 degrees. I’m getting to rather like this developer, especially with FP4. It seems to hold the highlights well, like D23, is fine grain but is a bit sharper than D23.

  1. Hi Andy. Have you recorded what’s on each sheet somewhere?

Mine are all filed in binders in chronological order of shooting (all formats), but I haven’t numbered them. I have a long outstanding project to label each sheet with a sticker containing details (Camera, location(s), dates etc.) but it would make sense to number the sheets too so I can log all the info electronically too.

I do have all the sheets scanned on the computed as well though, with tags containing pertinent details, so at least I don’t have to rely on my wonky memory too much!

    1. Hi Nige! The short answer is no! I haven’t recorded where on all. I’ve been getting better recently at writing down the spine of each sheet.. camera, film, developer, where, date etc, before about 3 years ago, most just have a number. I do have a key on a piece of cardboard lol. So I know films 1-111 are pre 1986, 112 – 199 are 1987 etc. If it was a trip then they have “India #1” or the like too – that’s about it. It’s kind of one of those things I’d tell my younger self to do if I could time travel! It seems my plan made when I was 18 of having a great memory for the remainder of my life may not be working out quite the way I had assumed! I did remember where I parked the car today so that’s good! 🙂 Cheers Andy
