IKB @ Bristol

I recently had a day in Bristol. The last time I drove in Bristol I swore I would never drive there again, my blood pressure wouldn’t stand the abysmal signage, one way systems and generally appalling layout. With that in mind, I went in by train. Bristol is in many ways Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s town.

I arrived on the GWR train. (Officially Great Western Railway. Sometimes known as God’s Wonderful Railway!) IKB was thier Cheif Engineer from 1833–1859. He built the line from Paddington to Bristol originally using the broad guage, for a faster smoother ride, always ahead of his time! Not content with that he also built Bristol’s “Temple Mead” Station below.

He also designed the Clifton (Bristol) Suspension Bridge, and the SS Great Britain, the latter will feature in a future post! There is statue to commemorate him at the station.

All of these photo’s were made on Ilford HP5, developed in D23, using my Canon EOS30, with the 40mm STM lens. There will be more to come from this combination over the coming few posts!
