Road to Rail Steam Fair

Having enjoyed my day trip to Swanage by steam train, my ticket also allowed entry into the “Road to Rail Steam Fair”, it was right next door to the park and ride car park. I got there just in time to catch the last two steam engines making their way around the arena. Such heavy and impressive beasts! Way in the background you can just see Corfe Castle.

The engine above was in crane mode lifting logs onto saw base, powered by yet another engine. These things are not quiet especially when driving a whopping great circular saw! (almost a panoramic!)

The last event that I went to like this was the Dorset Spring Fair, and that was almost the reverse. There, only one steam engine but a few cars and animals, while here, apart from a row of tractors, it was pretty much all steam. Even some smaller steam and a large “show” engine.

All of the images here were made with my Nikkormat on FP4, and developed in D23. I wanted a lower contrast developer on this roll. It was a hot sunny day which gave deep shadows as well as bright highlights, I think I got decent detail in both areas. I used the 28mm F for all.
