I got back to Swanage railway station in time to catch the 1:30pm diesel train to the other end of the line. It’s a preserved railway that is 9.5 miles long, and is about a half hour ride. In a strange turn of events the younger diesel engine had broken down, so the much older (1947) steam train had to come to the rescue and take up the slack! To cut a long story short, the 1:30pm diesel service turned into the 2:15pm steam. Not all bad, I got to travel steam again! The station (above) is the original.

I have to say that I find something special about the noise of the engine, the “clickety-clack” of the train and the smoke drifting away to the side. I’d had a nice time at the seaside, courtesy of the train.

However, my day out was not over. You may just spot a few tents behind the engine above – a mini steam festival “Road to Rail” – that’s for another post!
