SS Great Britain and HP5

I had a full day in the city of Bristol this weekend, it didn’t go quite as planned and so I ended up, rather unexpectedly visiting the SS Great Britain, designed by the great Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This wasn’t a bad thing as I’ve fancied seeing it for ages. Amazingly after over 100 years on the ocean waves it’s back in the very dry dock it was built in Bristol! I won’t go into details about the ship here, this is a photography blog after all – there is a good read over at Wiki should you wish!

I took my Canon EOS30 with me, and had the 40mm pancake STM attached. It’s a combination that I’ve grown the enjoy. I’m tempted to say that it’s my “easy set-up”, by which I mean, it’s auto focus, has a large focusable viewfinder, so I can see without faffing about with my glasses. It’s light and quick – I don’t even have to wind on (or rewind for that matter)! It’s perfect for holidays or days out. So easy yes, but then as far as photography is concerned shouldn’t the camera “get out of the way” anyway?

I’ve come to accept that there are certain combinations of film/developer that work well, or rather give results that I like. D23 and HP5 is one. As soon as I loaded the HP5 I knew I’d develop it in D23, I like how it handles the grain, it also gives a good contrast for me.

Over the next few posts no doubt you’ll see a few more photo’s of the ship, as I get around to scanning the remaining negs.
