An old new church on sea

The photo above was taken on the sea wall of Teignmouth as I walked back to the car park. A fairly typical sea side view, but from the same spot turning 180 degrees, I made the photo below.

By my calculations St Michaels in Teignmouth is about 30 meters from the sea! I looked up some details to discover that there was once a small chapel amongst fishermen’s huts around these parts, but by 1044 a Saxon church had been built on this spot. The church was completely rebuilt and the building as seen above was dedicated in 1823. It was designed by Andrew Patey, and is said to incorporate design features from the earlier church. The porch looks original and possibly Norman to me, although obviously parts have been restored!

The tower was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, and a set of eight bells were hung inside to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee. What an interesting gem, almost sat on the sea wall!
