Teignmouth #2

The end of my last post about Teignmouth found me at the end of the pier, losing £1’s worth of 2ps in an arcade machine. I won a few back, but then fed them into the greedy machine, so I left no richer than when I arrived, not that I expected to! I continued on. Teignmouth has a long seafront. Eventually the buildings run out, they are replaced by a cliff with a 50-60 foot wide promenade that the two track train runs along, then a spacious esplanade to walk. At the point of transition, the tracks appear from Teignmouth station, pass under a footbridge designed by IK Brunel but completed after his death by his son Henry (below).

Class 220?

Two main types of train run the route. The faster engines, I believe the one pictured above is a Class 220, but I am no expert in such things! A few yards later a train shot past at speed, but I got it! I believe this is a Class 802, and if that’s the case it was introduced in 2017 and made by Hitachi.

Class 802?

You can see from the above how close these trains run close to the beach! Sometimes the weather does get the better of them, just google Dawlish Train Storm Damage – you’ll see what I mean! Below is a slower option – I’m pretty sure this is a class 158 as the number is on the front! A DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit), slower and stops at more stations – like Starcross for example – but that’s another story!

Class 158

I appear to be turning into a train spotter! I have to admit I have little knowledge but I do enjoy trains, and I think they make good photo’s but I’m not about the get a notepad and stand on a station for hours!! In the photo above you can see a bit of the prom that juts out – this was the turn around point for my walk. I headed back to the town, and as I did made a few more images.

Nearly back to the pier – I liked the image above, nice bit of backlight, and below the view from the end of the pier looking back to dry land, gives an overview of the town.
