More of Poole

Poole Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world. It’s about 14 square miles. Only topped by Sydney, in Australia. Not the busiest port or deepest, just by area. In fact a large percentage is only about half a meter deep, so ferries and bigger ships have to be careful and follow channels or they’ll be in deep (shallow!) trouble! It does mean however instead of huge cargo ships and contains, it had much more pleasure activity! The town also has a large park, there is an inlet from the harbour to fill a large boating lake, in a protected corner, radio controlled boat are often operated “by men of a certain age” – there is even a clubhouse!

Adjacent to the clubhouse is a railway bridge with an underpass that takes walkers out onto a harbourside area known as Baiter. As I was walking along the path towards the quayside, a paraglider was flying about enjoying the view. The images above were made with a 35mm lens – he was low!

A little closer to the quayside is a car park and a slipway for smaller pleasure boats, jet ski’s etc. I liked this image with the crosses like bookends!

Further on again is the smaller part of the quay used by active fishermen and small fishing boats. It’s also an area where kids and their parents can more safely have a go with a line or a net. I remember as a kid always being interested in what was down there and seeing it – not so much catching it!

The quay itself has luxury apartment’s overlooking it – (don’t they always) and sometimes some huge private boats, in the shadow of one a busker appeared to have had enough for the day!
