A Church on a Tor

On the first day of my trip to and around Dartmoor in Devon (UK), I climbed up Brat Tor and visited the granite cross there. You can read that post here if you wish. This post, I climb another Tor, but this time to an entire church, St Michael de Rupe (St Michael of the Rock). It’s the parish church of Brentor, and sits on top Brent Tor at an altitude of 1100 feet.

At this altitude is has a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. In the first photo you can just see a railing in front of the church, it’s there as the drop is straight down at that spot! From there I tried the panoramic mode on my phone. You may remember how I love phones (not), so that was a challenge before I even started! To my surprise it not only worked, but didn’t take an hour to figure out how to make it work either!

The church was founded in 1130 but most of what is standing is later 13th/14th century. It’s open most days for visitors, and there are still regular services from Easter to end of September and odd services here and there during the winter. Inside I manged to make a time exposure, about 30 secs at f11 I think, on the PAN-F, and get the exposure correct too! Below is the image with very little correction needed.

As Tor’s go it’s a fairly easy climb, with a gentle but long slope up from the east. Carrying my kit, I was glad for an easier climb!
