Tri-X Over Christmas

Late last year I tried my first, or to be more accurate, what I think was my first roll of Kodak’s Tri-X, otherwise known as TX 400. You can read about that here. I actually purchased three rolls at the time, so I thought I’d pop one in my Leica over Christmas, just to make the odd photo here and there of what caught my eye.

I put the Zeiss Biogon 35mm on, loaded the film, and just grabbed the camera when I felt like it. A couple of days before the day itself a band was playing carols, next to the tree in Dorchester, so I made a few exposures.

I finally finished the roll last week. When it came to developing it, I decided to crack open a new bottle of Ilfosol 3. That produced smoother results than the ID11/D76, the tonal range also seems better to me. All these scans have had little to no work on them. I like the look of the results, it’s a pity that here in the UK it’s the price that it is – my local store has it a £14:99 a roll while HP5 is £9:99, that’s a big difference, one that I’m not sure I’m willing to pay on an ongoing way. Perhaps if I find myself in New York I might pick up a brick!! (or “Shoot less, better!”)

    1. Hi Shawn! I’m going to be positive and say “when” I come the the US next, I may well buy a brick to come home with. Now I’ve used up my stock of Delta 400, and only have one roll of Tri-X left, I’ll need to buy a couple rolls of 400 before too long, Kodak Tmax 400 is about the same price, but I haven’t used that in a while, so I may give that another spin for the fun of it! The price is one issue, but these days over here in the UK, the other issue is finding someone who actually has stock of Kodak products. HC110, D76, Tmax, Color Plus, all seem pretty hard to find! All part of the fun of analogue I guess!! Cheers and all best wishes Andy
