Shad Thames

Shad Thames is the area just around the corner from the Tower Bridge in London. It’s an area which I’ve seen photo’s of before and wanted to visit for a while but never really had the excuse to go. This visit to London provided the opportunity. The area was once run down, I remember sticking my nose in there as a youngster, aware that it was supposed to be an artists colony, but thought better of entering!

Butlers Wharf above, has now been gentrified and lost some of it’s charm. I’m pretty sure in the early 80’s that this “prom” in front wasn’t there and is a new addition, it’s pleasant enough. The artist and film maker Derek Jarman lived here once, and there is a plaque to commemorate this fact. It is the area behind with the walkways for which it is now known.

Back in the days when this was a working warehouse area the walkways were once used to roll barrels and wheel crates from one warehouse to another, today they serve as balconies for the pricey appartments.

A little further along is New Concordia Wharf, basically sitting at the mouth of the River Neckinger as it flows into the Thames. If this reminds you a little of the old London from the film Oliver, that’s because a few scenes were filmed here.
