The Keep is perhaps the most distinctive building in Dorchester. It is a military museum. I’m not much into military things, but I’ve always been intrigued to see what was inside the building. The heritage day, is a good excuse to have a look as it’s free entry for the day!

I took the Nikon F3 with me, loaded with a roll of Delta 400. I had a 50mm f1.8 in the bag but in the end only used the 35mm f2. In the foyer are two large guns, this is the smaller of the two. I made my way up several flights of stairs to the roof.

After climbing up and making the photo above, the batteries conked out! You would think that with getting on close to 50 years of photography under my belt I would have had a spare set with me – but no, that would make life far too easy! I took the batteries out, warmed them in my hands and let the camera rest a minute or two, and managed to get another two shots out of them.

The view from the roof (north) above, reveals that this are was once a military barracks, in the far background on the right hand side you can make out an industrial estate. This was once a WW1 prisoner of war camp that I mentioned here. Below is the view south, towards the park.

I made my way back down through the museum, and at ground level there were some people dressed in military costume from the past. I made one more exposure then the camera refused to run anymore. Needless to say I completely forgot about the manual release on the front of the camera, that lets you shoot at 1/80th even without batteries, however by then I only had 2 exposures left on the roll!

The moral of the story, as we all know! – “Always take spare batteries!”
Chatter: Nikon F3, 35mm f2, and Ilford Delta 400.
