The Tarrants: Pt3

Tarrant Monkton is the next of the Tarrant Villages, that follow the course of the little River Tarrant. I skirted the edge of it. The main part of “Monkton” is the others ide of the ford. I’ll visit the church another day! The ford here though is a pretty spot.

The hamlet of Tarrant Rawston has vanished, leaving behind only a farm house with a small, now private little chapel. Tarrant Rushton, the next village, is by-passed, the road passes right by it almost exactly north to south, the main street of the village lies parallel just to the east, with the river Tarrant running also north/south between the two! There are a some nice houses but the church of St Mary is the main building of interest.

The church dates from 1150, has an impressive Norman arch and a pair hagioscopes. No- I didn’t know what they were either!

In this case they are a pair of red earthenware jars that are set into the wall, for reverberation. Put simply they are an old system of public address – long before the days of a microphone and amplifier! Said to be very effective at “enriching the voice”!

Chatter: All the images in this post are on Ektar 100 and made with my Canon EOS 30, with the 40mm pancake STM lens.

In part 4 I shall make a small diversion!!
