Kentmere 100 @West Bay

After my visit to the village of Symondsbury in the last post, I drove the couple of miles down to the coast. The small seaside town of West Bay, these days most famous for being “Broadchurch” in the BBC series of the same name, but it has a very long history. Originally it was called Bridport Harbour, but changed it’s name when the railway arrived. Before that, it was a ship building centre, with over 400 sizable ships being built over a 100 year period up until 1879. It was reported that the largest was over 1,000 tonnes, so we are talking quite large ships here! Bridport, the town itself, is about a mile and a half inland. It was known for it’s thriving rope making industry, that seems to have started about 1200 and interestingly although much smaller, rope is still made there today!

I parked up in the small car park at the start of one of the harbour piers, grabbed an ice cream and had a stroll out to the end, making a few photo’s as I went along.

  1. Nice pictures. 🙂

This reminds me that there’s a rope works in Barton on Humber (which is probably the closest place to me that I can see moored boats at low tide). It also has the attraction of the huge Humber Bridge. I need to get back there one day and take more pictures.

    1. Hello! Many thanks! I grew up by the sea, and even now I’m only a dozen miles from it. I can’t imagine living too far from it! That said I’m not too keen on being ON it!! 🙂 – Cheers and best wishes – Andy
