My visit to Hinton Ampner in all honesty wasn’t to see the house, or even the garden, it was the trees. Call me a tree hugger! The wonderful example above, is a Pedunculate Oak, all that is known is that it’s “ancient” – and has a girth of about 520cm! It’s a wonderful oak – and yes I gave it a hug!

The two Lime trees above were originally planted to line the drive to the old Tudor house that once stood here. They date from the early 18th century. Below, is a Horse Chesnut which also dates from the early 18th century and has a girth of 450cm.

I believe the above to be a Sweet Chestnut, which is also considered “Ancient” and having a girth of 535cm. Below is another ancient Oak.

In case you are wondering how I know this – no I didn’t take a tape measure with me to measure the trunks. There is a “Tree Trail” around the estate with an accompanying map, giving the details. The other obvious statement is that, of course these images, no where near give justice to these wonderful living things – for that you’d just have to go there yourself!!
