6×6: Cheesefoot Head

Cheesefoot Head is a natural amphitheatre. Basically it’s a dairy/arable farm, that produces milk, oats, barley and wheat. I was curious as to why it was called a “head” when clearly it’s a depression, only to find it’s more commonly known as Matterley Bowl – much more sense! The South Downs Way, is just off the right of the image above.

I had my Hasselblad 501cm with the 80mm and a roll of Ilford Delta 100 on the go, so I pulled into the car park to take a look and make a couple of images. Not the easiest thing to make an interesting photo of. As you can see I’ve cropped top and bottom – too much sky and foreground.

I also waited for the clouds to move about a little, and walked a little further down the path to get a fence in the foreground.

The image above is the one I would print from the trio. It was made about a minute after the one above it, and (not that easy to see in the smaller scan) the tractor/combine has moved into the sun, and the strip of shade across the image is a little more pronounced.

As a history fact: General Eisenhower addressed US troops here prior to The WW2 D-Day Landings.

As a fun fact, back at the small pull in roadside car park someone has left a loo!

(… yes someone had, and yes it did!)
